When was the last time you asked for this?

By this I mean spiritual gifts. Most of us have heard of them and might even be gifted by God in one or two of them but the challenge of this post is whether we operate in these gifts in the marketplace.

The gifts I am referring to in this passage are the ones listed in 1 Corinthians 12, though I appreciate that there are other giftings mentioned in the scriptures.

‘Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues and to still another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.’

I love to do those quizzes where you are asked a series of questions, which is then scored to reveal your dominant gift. Ever since I have been doing them, I always seem to come out with the same results. But there is a problem with that – it is limiting and doesn’t stretch faith to ask for more.

We can mistakenly assume that what the scores reveal are the  gifts that God wants us to operate in (and yes, to an extent that is true) but the scriptures encourage us in 1 Corinthians 14:1 to ‘Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy’.

Therefore, just sticking with 1 Corinthians 12 for a minute, when really was the last time you consciously desired and asked God for these gifts?  As I was putting this post together I realised that I hadn’t specifically asked God for any gift for years.

For example, to be an effective Christian in marketplace we need the word of knowledge and wisdom whilst a mother needs to have the gift of discernment (and an eagle eye!) to know the influence of friends on their teenage children; an evangelist needs the gift of healing, miracles. You get the picture! What are the gifts that you need to make you effective in your sphere of influence?

There is a scripture that I always find challenging. It’s found in 1 Corinthians 14:24

‘But if an unbeliever or an inquirer comes in while everyone is prophesying, they are convicted of sin and are brought under judgment by all, 25 as the secrets of their hearts are laid bare. So they will fall down and worship God, exclaiming, “God is really among you!”

In this scripture, the application of the gift of prophecy brings about the revelation of God and a response from the unbeliever! I believe the same principle should apply in the marketplace. Showing mercy, compassion and a shoulder to cry on is all good but operating in the gifts of the Spirit is powerful and reveals Christ to the world around us. This is what co-labouring with God in the marketplace is all about.

When I was meditating on this, I was reminded of Christmas morning. The kids have been waiting in eager anticipation for the gifts they have desired (and reminded you of many times!). That’s the way it should be with us.  We ask, eagerly desire and then wait in expectation. Once received, we need to start using it.

So I end this post with the question I started with, when was the last time you asked for this? If you do regularly operate in some of these gifts, why don’t you ask for more? God is not limited and neither should you be. I am on a journey and hope you can join me on it.

So until I appear again in your inbox with more insight from the scriptures, stay blessed
