The need for directional prophecy

This week’s post is written from a personal perspective and is a follow-on from the last post. In this post I share an experience that challenged my belief which in turn led me to the scriptures and changed my viewpoint.

Without going into any more detail, I was confronted with a situation that could have resulted in a life-long impact and burden to me. I was looking at years of counselling without any assurance that I was dealing with the root cause of the problem. I was looking at years of possible distraction from what God had called me to do.

However, in the midst of all of this, I was blessed to have strong prophetic directional insight that resulted in the situation being turned around overnight. God spoke into the root of the problem. Not only was there revelation, but also wisdom and the problem was solved. Interestingly, the root cause of the problem was not what it appeared to be.

This made me hunger for more specific prophetic insight in many other areas of my life. Whilst I rejoice in the personal blessing and divine intervention of God, I couldn’t help thinking about other people. We all know Christians in the midst of a hopeless situation. We offer words of encouragement and nothing else.

As a friend and I discussed this situation, we realised that we had been taught that we no longer needed this type of prophetic direction as we now have the Holy Spirit living in us. I started to feel restless about this statement as my personal experience revealed the importance of personal prophecy which was vital.

I believe that we should actively seek prophetic people in our midst who will minister into specific situations. Could it be that we don’t have access to prophetic people within our local congregations rather than the fact that we don’t believe in the prophetic gifts. Perhaps we don’t believe in the role of a prophet to speak into our situations, so again we don’t receive it. I cannot find anywhere in the scriptures where we are told that the nature of prophecy in the Old Testament had become extinct.

When I started to research what I call directional prophecy, I was challenged to read through the books of 1 Samuel to 2 Kings and I was amazed at the role of the prophets (alongside the priests) in the lives of the Israelites and in particular the lives of the kings. The prophets were able to bring prophetic insight into people’s personal lives.

I am not suggesting that we go to the prophet for every single little thing but certainly in key issues of life (and you will know when) it is appropriate. Yes, we all have the Holy Spirit, yes, we can all prophesy but we do need this level of prophetic input into our lives so we can do effectively what God says we can.

I was encouraged by something that Bill Hamon wrote in one of his books on prophecy (Prophets and personal prophecy). This excerpt articulates clearly the point I am trying to make in this article.

“Some years ago as my reputation as a prophet began to spread, ministers and saints began to call me for a word of the Lord on specific situations. People would ask me questions when I was ministering in personal prophecy at a local church. At first I was afraid to respond, lacking confidence that I had the right to expect God to give me an answer for them. So I made a thorough search of the scriptures and discovered that it was in fact the prophet’s prerogative to ask God for such information”.

I don’t know how the Holy Spirit distributes gifts to the saints, but for those of us that are prophetic, let’s ask God to awaken the gift of directional prophecy’ so that we may minister to others. For all of us, may the Lord either give us or lead us to people who operate in this gift when we need it

So until I appear again in your inbox with more insight from the scriptures, stay blessed
