Do not share in the sins of others

And keep yourself pure and by default avoid the consequence of sin’. I have read my bible many times and know all about sin and its consequences but the scripture above was tucked away in 1 Timothy (5:22) – a book I had read many times before. We know about the consequences of sin and the fact that corrupt company corrupts good character (1 Corinthians 15:33) but I was amazed to see that the New Testament has quite a bit about the sins of others and what our approach should be.

We tend to think that as long as we have not committed a particular sin, we are free from that sin and its consequences. While we are individually responsible for our sins, we can sometimes be responsible for the sins of others, as supported by the scriptures below.

In this week’s post, we let the scriptures speak for themselves. This week’s post is short and to the point.

Those who are sinning rebuke in the presence of all, that the rest also may fear. I charge you before God and the Lord Jesus Christ and the elect angels that you observe these things without prejudice, doing nothing with partiality. Do not lay hands on anyone hastily, nor share in other people’s sins; keep yourself pure (1 Timothy 5:20-22).

2 John 1:11 – for he who greets him shares in his evil deeds.

2 Corinthians 6:14 – Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness?

1 Corinthians 5:9 – I wrote to you in my epistle not to keep company with sexually immoral people.

Proverbs 1:10 – My son, if sinners entice you, do not consent.

Ephesians 5:11 – And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them.

Do not become responsible for other people’s sins. What a sombre thought. It would appear that even without committing the same sin as the sinner, we can share in the sins of others.

So this week’s post is straight to the point and I don’t think I can add anything else.

Until I appear again in your inbox with more insight from the scriptures, stay blessed
