Be a river, not a reservoir

I just couldn’t get these words out of my head, so I decided to write a post about them. I am not even sure whether I heard someone say this phrase or whether I read it in a book, nevertheless, I found myself meditating on it, so I decided to explore its meaning.

Let’s start by considering the dictionary definition of these words before we think of the spiritual application.

A reservoir essentially holds water until it is needed. The dictionary defines a reservoir as a large natural or artificial lake used for the storage and regulation of water. A dam controls the amount of water that flows out of the reservoir. Essentially, it is a storage system. The key word here is ‘storage’.

A river, on the other hand is a large natural stream of water flowing into a channel to the sea, a lake or to another river. It is also defined as fresh water flowing across the surface of the land, usually to the sea. The key word here is ‘flow’.

So immediately, we see the spiritual application. God fills us with the Holy Spirit so that we can ‘flow out’ to others. When we come to church or wherever we get our spiritual encouragement and exaltation, we become reservoirs – filled up as storage systems.

We are meant to be reservoirs in that we are to be filled up with the Holy Spirit. However, this is just the starting point, we are not to stop there. There has to be a flow of that water outwards. This explanation helps us to better understand what Jesus said in John 7:38.

“Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.”

God wants the richness of the Holy Spirit inside of us to flow out and touch others wherever we may be – whether at home, in the marketplace, workplace or wherever we are. The water should come out of us both in the church and elsewhere. Remember, Jesus did not just minister in the synagogue. The waters of a reservoir are not restrictive, only the reservoir is.

I pray that our lives will not be like a static tank (reservoir) but a river through which others are refreshed.

So until I appear again in your inbox with more insight from the scriptures, stay blessed
